This is the first in a line of instructional videos i will be making for the 17x54 wood drift boat plans available from my website http://www.bakerwooddriftb.... The gunnel wood would be ok at 1 x 1" square. but 1.5 x 1.5" would be better. i have previously tried 1 x 1" mahogany and found it too stiff. i was able to laminate 1 x 1/2" to a previous boat, but thought there was probably a more flexible wood for my next boat. the gunnels do help stiffen the top edge of the 1/2" marine plywood sides.. Re: wood gunnels by the way the boat is registered as a 1958 seaking. i have a 1965 seaking 5hp motor for it. the wood is the trim that covers the gunnels..

With woodstrip, fiberglass and epoxy construction, all of the wood is encapsulated in epoxy, so scuppers are not needed for drainage. although there is a bit of weight saving, you also lose a bit of strength because the gunwale is not in continuous contact with the hull, so why not just make the gunwale a bit thinner in the first place.. Replacing wood gunwales on 11ft row boat if yours is ply or grp, shape the wood, then glue/bed the inner and one outer to the gunnel with screws from the outer through to the inner. then glue the second outer to the first. hides the screws. the sections i used were about 25mm high and 15mm thick. no steaming needed.. Wood decks. mahogany replacement decks are not available. specify which model you have in order to obtain the correct sized parts. note: in all cases, the serial number from your canoe can be very helpful in determining the original gunwale system used on your boat and determine necessary replacement components. pre-installation preparation.
