Boat positions (sport rowing) save. in the sport of rowing, each rower is numbered by boat position in ascending order from the bow to the stern (with the exception of single sculls). the person who is seated on the first seat is always the 'bow', the closest to the stern is commonly referred to as the 'stroke'.. For rowing, the position of the crew is based on two things. 1 - which side do they row (one oar per person means half the crew have an oar going to the right and half to the left - bowside/strokeside or port/starboard are the names).. Boat positions there are eight rowing positions in a racing shell. seats 1 and 2 are referred to as the bow pair. this pair especially “sets the boat”. rowers in these positions must have smooth and fluid technique. seats 3, 4, 5 and 6 are referred to as the power or engine seats. rowers in these positions must be large and strong..
The coach or coxswain also will often call for groups to row according to their place in the boat; ie: bow pair or stern four. additionally, rowers need to be aware of which side they are rowing, whether port or starboard as rowing commands are often given by side, such as "check it on port".. In the boat race, more than in international competition, the coxswain is a vital addition to the crew. a course stretching four-and-a-quarter miles, with three large bends, is far more demanding than the standard 2000m rowing lake.. The position of the pin (centre of the oarlock) is measured from the centre line of the boat, not the side of the boat. this means that the oarlock is not further out in the middle of the boat than the ends..
